For a long time, free love was synonym for free union, a relation which was not hold neither to civil nor religious laws. There was a period in which marriage was indissoluble and divorce was a controversial scene; at that time, the freedom of two people of joining without taking into account the law and of spliting up «when love comes to its end» was grounds for scandal, but it did not necessary mean the later idea of sexual liberation. Moreover, in general, it was connected with the link between a man and a woman, not between two or more people of the same sex. Then, marriage, family and man-woman couple joint «for life» were desecrated, and experience whispers that loyalty is impossible, that monogamy is an illusion and that desire’s laws always triumph over custom’s laws. The innocence shouts that love can only be free, that affection diversity is a fact, and that the desire obeys to a natural order, previous and superior to any established social one.
We have titled El amor libre (The free love) to this heterogeneous – and mainly heterosexual – selection of works in honor of an already classic title of anarchist articles and books and to an ideal that also belongs to the romantic and modernist tradition.
