It was April 26th 1937; Monday. So, it was a market day in Gernika. In the morning, it was a beautiful spring day. However, that good weather is bad in war times. If it had rained, the planes would not have taken off but it did not rain and the planes bombed Gernika.
The journalist George L. Steer arrived in Gernika in the evening and he could not believe the hecatomb he had before his eyes. The following day he wrote what had happened in The Times newspaper: Gernika has been bombed by the fascists. And thanks to that, the world knew the truth.
